Topic:

UL1008, 7th Edition and Short Circuit Testing of Automatic Transfer Switches

Description: Short circuit events in all electrical equipment can have catastrophic consequences to other equipment and more importantly to operating and maintenance personnel. UL 1008 is the “Standard for Transfer Switch Equipment” and it was issued by UL in 1972 to help ensure the safety of installation, operating and maintenance personnel who interface with transfer switch equipment. With that objective in mind, UL has made subsequent revisions to the standard to ensure transfer switches are adequately tested to safely withstand and close on the short-circuit ratings shown on their labels.

The presentation will review the major changes in short-circuit testing requirements and resultant ratings shown on the transfer switch labels since the UL 1008 standard was originally issued in 1972. The focus of the discussion will be on the 7th Edition of UL 1008, which became effective November 1, 2014 and has resulted in significant changes to the short-circuit ratings shown on all transfer switch products in the industry.  This includes the qualification of the circuit breakers the transfer switch manufacturer is permitted to list in the “specific breaker” section of their short circuit rating label.

Speaker:  Ronald A. Schroeder is the Director of Technology & Industry Standards for Power Switching and Controls at ASCO Power Technologies, LP.  He has an AAS in Engineering from Union College in Cranford, NJ and a BS degree in Industrial Technology from Kean University in Union, NJ. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and will be eligible for Life membership status in August of this year.  He has 45 years of experience at ASCO including responsibilities in the power testing laboratory, applications engineering, government contract management, product management and has lead numerous project teams in the development and release of new products. He is a member of the Technical Committee for NFPA 110/111 Emergency & Standby Power Systems; NFPA Correlating Committee for Health Care Facilities and UL STP 67, Panel-boards, Dead-front Switches and related products. He has also been teaching classes for 22 years on Automatic Transfer Switches at both the Basic and Advanced Rowley Power Schools administered by the Electrical Generator Society of America (EGSA) and recently served a 3 year term on the EGSA Board of Directors.
